Most COPD patients never go to rehab, despite health benefits

Nov. 12 (UPI) -- The vast majority of patients hospitalized for COPD, the fourth highest cause of death in the United States, never get follow up pulmonary rehabilitation. Those startling findings, which wer published Monday in the Journal Annals of Thoracic Society, found that only 2 percent of more than 4,200 COPD patients in the U.S. began pulmonary rehabilitation after six months of COPD-related hospitalization. And among 6,100 COPD patients, only 2.7 percent received rehabilitation for their condition. "Unfortunately, many patients face multiple barriers to participating, such as family responsibilities or transportation, and participation rates are especially low among vulnerable populations," Kerry A. Affleck describes 'lifelong struggle' after rehab ends

Ben Affleck has completed a 40-day alcohol rehab programme, but said battling the addiction is a "lifelong and difficult struggle". Enhanced rehab doubles movement recovery after stroke

Sept. 27 (UPI) -- A new therapy technique doubled the rate of upper limb recovery in stroke patients compared with rehab alone, according to a study. Researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas developed targeted plasticity therapy, which is stimulation of the vagus nerve paired with traditional motor-skill rehabilitation. The researchers, who published their findings Thursday in the journal Stroke, said the method is safe. UT Dallas' spinoff company MicroTransponder funded the study. "Stroke is too common and too debilitating for us to tolerate the status quo," clinical trial leader Dr. Jane Wigginton, the chief medical officer at UT Dallas' Texas Biomedical Device Center, said in a press release.
