It’s too early to say if Liverpool are back in business but a 2-0 win at Sheffield United will make Jurgen Klopp and Co. feel a whole lot better. They went into the Bramall Lane clash having lost their last four matches in the Premier League but they had no such problems on Sunday night. AFP Roberto Firmino and Curtis Jones set Liverpool on their way for the win Curtis Jones slotted in the opener just after the break while a Roberto Firmino effort, which took a sizeable deflection off Kean Bryan, sealed the three points. Liverpool’s second goal was actually their 7,000th in top flight matches on a night where they could have had more but for the brilliant goalkeeping of Aaron Ramsdale. Ramsdale saved efforts to deny Firmino, Andy Robertson, Moha...

Microplastics: Seeking the ‘plastic score’ of the food on our plates

Science
Microplastics are found everywhere on Earth, yet we know surprisingly little about what risks they pose to living things. Scientists are now racing to investigate some of the big unanswered questions.Daniella Hodgson is digging a hole in the sand on a windswept beach as seabirds wheel overhead. "Found one," she cries, flinging down her spade. She opens her hand to reveal a wriggling lugworm. Plucked from its underground burrow, this humble creature is not unlike the proverbial canary in a coal mine.A sentinel for plastic, the worm will ingest any particles of plastic it comes across while swallowing sand, which can then pass up the food chain to birds and fish."We want to see how much plastic the island is potentially getting on i...

The Lib Dems are using data to profile every voter in UK – and give you a score

Technology
The Liberal Democrats are profiling every voter in the country by rating their political preferences, Sky News can reveal. This includes which party they will vote for in the next election and whether they are a Remainer or Leaver. The percentage ratings - there are at least 42 in total, although the identity of only 37 are known - estimate whether someone voted Leave or Remain in the 2016 EU referendum and predict how they would vote if there was a second poll in 2019.Other scored characteristics include "Likelihood of being a Labour voter in 2019", "Likelihood of being a core Lib Dem" and "Net difference in likelihood of voting for the Conservative or Brexit Party in 2019".The system, which uses a sophisticated computer model to generate the scores, also assesses personal outlooks, giving...
