Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Canadian Commercial has been awarded a $ 10 million contract by the U.S. Navy for the refurbishment and manufacturing of the TR-343 sonar transducer tube assemblies for repair purposes. The TR-343 transducer is used in the AN/SQS-53C hull-mounted sonar array for the AN/SQQ-89(V) sonar weapons system. Manufacturing of the tube assemblies is expected to run through November 2023 under the Navy contract. The AN/SQQ-89(V) Surface Ship ASW Combat system is an integrated undersea warfare suite designed to detect, track, provide targeting data and engage enemy submarines, mines, and other underwater systems. It collects data from a variety of sonar systems such as towed-arrays, sonobuoys and other active and passive systems into one sensor picture, allowing better situational awa...

Black Sea ship: 'World's oldest intact wreck' found

Science
A Greek merchant ship dating back more than 2,400 years has been found lying on its side off the Bulgarian coast. The 23m (75ft) wreck, found in the Black Sea by an Anglo-Bulgarian team, is being hailed as officially the world's oldest known intact shipwreck. The researchers were stunned to find the merchant vessel closely resembled in design a ship that decorated ancient Greek wine vases. The rudder, rowing benches and even the contents of its hold remain intact."It's like another world," Helen Farr from the expedition told the BBC. "It's when the ROV [remote operated vehicle] drops down through the water column and you see this ship appear in the light at the bottom so perfectly preserved it feels like you step back in time."The r...

Japan slams Chinese ship for oceanographic research in EEZ

World
Oct. 8 (UPI) -- A Chinese oceanographic research ship conducted activities in Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone without prior notice, according to a Japanese press report. NHK reported Monday the ship was active near Hateruma Island, Okinawa Prefecture, and the vessel entered Japan-clamed waters around 4:20 p.m. Sunday. The ship was in an area about 120 miles southeast of Hateruma. The vessel was identified as the Xiangyanghong, No. 10, and was seen lowering a steel rope into the ocean, according to Japan's maritime security. The activity was observed from a Japanese surveillance plane. The Japanese coast guard said the Chinese vessel was conducting some kind of investigation. Conducting activities within Japan's EEZ without receiving prior permission is inadmissible, the coast guard said....

Japanese supply ship heads to space station after delays

Technology
An unmanned Japanese space capsule is headed to the International Space Station filled with cargo including food, experiments and new batteries. The craft was launched Sunday at 2:52 a.m. from the Tanegashima Space Center in southern Japan. It will take 4 ½ days to reach the space station. The launch was delayed for about two weeks because of bad weather and a mechanical problem. The delay has led NASA to postpone two space walks to install the six lithium-ion batteries until new crew members arrive next month. They will replace aging nickel-hydrogen batteries for the station's electric power, enabling an extension of its operations. The supply ship is a 9-meter- (30-foot-) long cylinder that will be retrieved by the space station's robotic arm. It is named Kounotori, which means ...

The visit concerned a discussion of the Australian SEA 5000 Future Frigates Program, and included a viewing of the new Type 26 Global Combat Ship Glasgow. Construction of the Glasgow started about a year ago, and the visit was only days after an announcement by the Australian Government that its nine anti-submarine Hunter-class frigates will be based on the U.K.'s new Type 26 design. The Hunter-class will be built by BAE in Australia for the Royal Australian Navy. "Australia's selection of the Type 26 Combat Ship for its Future Frigates program reflects the world-leading anti-submarine warfare capabili...
