'A single piece of plastic' can kill sea turtles, says study

Science
A new study suggests that ingesting even a single piece of plastic can be deadly for sea turtles.Researchers found there was a one in five chance of death for a turtle who consumed just one item - rising to 50% for 14 pieces. The team found that younger turtles are at a higher risk of dying from exposure to plastic than adults. The authors say their research raises concerns over the long term survival of some turtle species. The never ending surge of plastic into the world's oceans is taking an increasing toll on iconic marine species. While it has been relatively straightforward for researchers to document the threat to animals who become entangled in plastic and drown, determining the impact of consumed plastic is much harder. The authors of this study es...

'Molecular hopper' can transport, manipulate single strands of DNA

Science
Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Scientists have designed a molecular machine -- a "molecular hopper" -- capable of moving single strands of DNA. The hopper moves along a nanoscale track. Its locomotion is made possible by the making and breaking of simple chemical bonds. In lab tests, the hopper successfully carried single strands of DNA through a protein nanotube. The breakthrough could inspire the next generation of gene editing technologies. "Being able to control molecular motion is the holy grail of building nanoscale machines," Hagan Bayley, a professor of chemistry at Oxford University, said in a news release. "Being able to process single molecules of DNA under precise chemical control may provide an alternative to the use of enzymes in DNA sequencing technologies, improving their speed and the ...

Single PSA test not effective at reducing prostate cancer deaths, study says

Health
March 9 (UPI) -- Researchers found a single PSA blood test had no benefit in reducing prostate caner in a large study conducted in Britain. The prostate-specific antigen test increased detection of low-risk prostate cancer but there was no significant difference in mortality after 10 years, according to findings published this weeky in the Journal of the American Medical Association.Researchers studied 419,582 men from 573 primary care practices in the Britain between 2001 and March 2016. Current policy in the United Kingdom doesn't advocate screening. In the United States, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends against the screening for men who do not have symptoms because of false positives or false negatives, as well as anxiety and unnecessary biopsies. The task force is part ...
