Long-running coal plant on Navajo Nation stops production

Health
A massive coal-fired power plant that served customers in the West for nearly 50 years shut down Monday, the latest closure in a shift away from coal and toward renewable energy and cheaper power. The Navajo Generating Station near the Arizona-Utah line was expected to shutter by the end of the year, but the exact day hadn’t been certain as the plant worked to deplete a stockpile of coal. It stopped producing electricity shortly after noon Monday when shift supervisor Fred Larson, a 41-year employee, put the plant permanently offline. “It will be hard for people because for employees, there’s a lot of pride, a lot of passion for their work, and they have put their heart and soul in this plant,” said Paul Ostapuk, who oversees safety and environment at the plant. The 2,250-megawatt...

Debt Recovery Tribunal stops DHFL from making payments

MUMBAI: The Pune bench of the Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) has stopped DHFL from making any further payments to any of its unsecured creditors, passing an order on an application filed by Catalyst Trustee, the custodian of the indebted home financier’s bond holders. “The defendant …(DHFL) is temporarily… restrained (from) making further payments to any of its unsecured creditors, save and except in cases where the payments are to be made on a pro-rata basis to all secured creditors…,” the DRT said in the order, of which ET has seen a copy. A day earlier, the Bombay High Court allowed DHFL to make payments to banks and NBFCs that have securitisation arrangements with the stressed mortgage financier. “The order passed by the DRT will not have any bearing on the order passed by the Bombay Hig...

Amazon stops selling 'April Fool' Dash buttons

Technology
Amazon has stopped selling Dash buttons, the "April Fool" product which it believed would make it more convenient for customers to purchase their favourite products.Dash buttons were first launched on 1 April 2015, prompting most people to suspect they were a joke - although there is a long history of companies launching groundbreaking products on that day. But unlike Gmail, Google's free email service with 1GB of storage which was launched on 1 April, 2004, the Dash buttons failed to permanently disrupt the world of retail. They were essentially wifi-connected plastic buttons featuring brand names stuck around the home which could be pressed to immediately reorder a specific product.Costing £4.99 to purchase in the UK, the button's adhesive back allowed it to be mounted on a surface n...

Russian space telescope Spektr-R stops responding

Science
Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Russian space officials said Saturday they're working to re-establish contact with the country's Spektr-R space radio telescope, which stopped responding to commands. Astro Space Center chief Nikolai Kardashev said that though the telescope stopped responding, it's still transmitting scientific information. The link went down Friday morning. "Specialists of the Main Operational Group of Spacecraft Control are carrying out work to remove the existing problems," Russia's state space corporation, Roscosmos, said. Russia launched the Spektr-R into space in 2011 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The long-delayed project was expected to have a lifespan of five years. The telescope was meant to study black holes, pulsars and other deep-space objects. With a 30-foot-wid...
