Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Vita Vea suffers LCL sprain

Sports
Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive lineman Vita Vea will miss some time after suffering a sprained LCL in his left knee. League sources told ESPN and the Tampa Bay Times on Friday that Vea sustained the injury during a one-on-one blocking drill with guard Alex Cappa in Tuesday's practice. He grabbed his left knee but walked off the field without assistance. The injury could sideline Vea up to two months, according to ESPN. The defensive lineman's injury won't require surgery. The Bucs selected Vea with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Washington. He missed all of the team's training camp and the opening three games of the regular season last year due to a strained calf muscle. Vea recorded 28 combined tackles and three sacks in 13 games (eight starts) last...

A pair of backup quarterbacks with decorated resumes will be out to send their respective teams to a 2-0 record to start the season. Nick Foles, who is the reigning Super Bowl Most Valuable Player, leads the Philadelphia Eagles (1-0) into Raymond James Stadium to face Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-0) on Sunday (1 p.m. ET). Eagles head coach Doug Pederson announced Foles as the team's starter while franchise quarterback Carson Wentz continues his rehabilitation from a torn ACL and LCL in December. Wentz, who has not been cleared for contact, watched Foles step in and play superbly in the team's championship run last season. Foles, however, sputtered throughout the preseason and labored in Philadelphia's 18-12 victory versus the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 6. The 29-yea...

Tampa Bay Buccaneers notebook: Tony Dungy disappointed by Jameis Winston suspension

Sports
TAMPA, Fla. --Former Bucs coach and current NFL analyst Tony Dungy said that quarterback Jameis Winston's three-game suspension is disappointing, but he still hopes the 24-year-old can learn from his mistakes moving forward. "Obviously, it's disappointing, and you never want to have your leader not there and available for the team," Dungy told the Tampa Bay Times. "I'm sure he's disappointed about that, too. I think time will tell in how he handles it. "You hope this comes through loud and clear and he says, 'I'm never going to put myself, my family, my team in this position again.' It's a tough one, and something you don't like to see. I think time will tell here." Dungy told the Times he has talked with Winston "quite a bit" in the three years since he was drafted. Dungy said he see...

Both teams expect to be at their best on Monday for Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals at Capital One Arena with Tampa Bay holding a 3-2 series advantage and the chance to advance to the Stanley Cup Final to face the Vegas Golden Knights. The Capitals, a franchise haunted by the failures of postseasons past, are staring down another one heading into their first elimination game of this year's playoffs. After finally pushing past the Pittsburgh Penguins and advancing past the second round for the first time in 20 years -- and the first time in the Alex Ovechkin era -- Washington kept rolling right on in to the conference finals, winning the first tw...
