Teachers lament ‘chaotic’ virus rules in German schools

BERLIN -- Under pressure to ease Germany's virus restrictions, officials last month agreed to gradually reopen schools. Confirmed COVID-19 cases started climbing again, leading some states to backtrack while others pressed on and insisted that in-class teaching must be the rule.Caught in the middle are students, parents and teachers such as Michael Gromotka, whose plans to teach art to his year 7 to 9 students were upended last week when the state of Berlin nixed their return to school after months of remote learning.“It was all very chaotic," Gromotka said. "We got less than a week’s notice.”Gromotka, who is married to a fellow teacher and has a child in primary school, says the back and forth reflects the absence of a coherent strategy in Germany for how to safely keep schools open.Autho

Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Teachers and staff "play a central role in in-school transmission" of COVID-19, highlighting the importance of vaccination for educators, according to a report released Monday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nearly half of all in-school cases in a Georgia district recorded between Dec. 1 and Jan. 22 were linked with "educator-to-educator" or "educator-to-student" transmission, the data showed. "These findings suggest that educators can play an important role in in-school transmission and that in-school transmission can occur when physical distancing and mask compliance are not optimal," CDC researchers said in the report. Poland’s striking teachers warn high-school exams threatened

World
The union leader of Poland's striking teachers says that key high-school graduation exams next month could be cancelled if government does not respond to pay demands. Slawomir Broniarz warned that the exams, scheduled for May, may not happen because the strike may prevent the qualification procedure. On Friday, teachers were on strike for the fifth day in a row as part of an indefinite action related to their 30% pay demand. The government is urging the strikers to accept an offer of half that amount. Rallies were held in Warsaw and many other cities across Poland in support of the teachers' pay demands. Friday was the last day of middle school exams, which were held in spite of the strike action. On Monday, primary school exams begin. Teachers' monthly earnings range from 1,800 zlotys to...
