
Aged, recycled urine may be safe alternative to traditional fertilizer
Jan. 24 (UPI) -- Recycled and aged human urine is a safe alternative to traditional fertilizers. According to new research from the University of Michigan, bacteria in recycled and aged urine can't transfer antibiotic resistance capabilities to bacteria in the soil, making it potentially usable. Traditional fertilizers like nitrogen and phosphorous contribute to water pollution. When the fertilizers are washed into local waterways, the nutrient overload can trigger algal blooms that produce toxins and depress oxygen levels. The production of traditional fertilizers is also expensive and energy intensive.
