The boys trapped in the Thailand cave could face an unusual disease

Health
As the rescue efforts for the 12 boys and their coach trapped in a flooded Thailand cave have continued, the world has been hoping for the entire group's safe return to the surface. But after surviving the weather conditions, severe body stresses and unimaginable emotional distress of being trapped for days in dark, wet caverns, the 13 have more challenges ahead. All that time inside the caverns has exposed them to a dangerous and rare infection, often called "cave disease." What is 'cave disease?' Cave disease, also called speleonosis, is an infection with a fungus called Histoplasma capsulatum. It was first described in the 1940s as an “unusual” lung disease affecting a group of men camping in an abandoned storm cellar. The fungus is naturally found all over the world...

A look inside the rescue effort to save boys trapped inside Thailand cave

World
In northern Thailand, rescuers are working around the clock to save 12 boys and their soccer coach who have been trapped inside a partly flooded cave for almost two weeks. New images and video taken from inside the Tham Luang Nang Non cave show crews with flashlights and equipment, struggling to wade through the floodwater's powerful currents as they prepare for a potential operation to rescue the group in the coming days. After days of heavy rain, rescuers took advantage of the relatively dry weather by pumping out as much floodwater as possible from the cave. Meanwhile, crews are working to divert any water flows in the area from entering the cave. The images also show crews installing dive lines and leaving extra air tanks along the path that rescuers may use to get the boys and...

Ancient tailed spider trapped in amber offers insights into origin of spiders

Science
Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Scientists have discovered a new spider species, an arachnid with a tail, hiding in a piece of ancient amber. The amber fossil is roughly 100 million years old and could offer new insights into the origin and evolution of spiders during the Cretaceous period. Amber sourced from Myanmar has become a popular source of scientistic discoveries in recent years."Interest stepped up about ten years ago when it was discovered this amber was mid-Cretaceous," Paul Selden, a paleontologist at the University of Kansas, said in a news release. "Therefore, all the insects found in it were much older than first thought."Selden is the author of a paper describing the spider species, published this week in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution."It's [amber] been coming into China where de...
