'Oumuamua: 'space cigar's' tumble hints at violent past

Science
The space interloper 'Oumuamua is spinning chaotically and will carry on doing so for more than a billion years. That is the conclusion of new Belfast research that has examined in detail the light bouncing off the cigar-shaped asteroid from outside our Solar System. "At some point or another it's been in a collision," says Dr Wes Fraser from Queen's University. His team's latest study is featured in Sunday's Sky At Night episode on the BBC and published in Nature Astronomy. It is yet another intriguing finding about this strange object that has fascinated scientists since its discovery back in October. 'Oumuamua comes from a different star system. Its path across the sky confirms it does not originate in our solar neighbourhood. Initially, it was thought the object could be a comet, but i...

Market tumble lessens market fears of Fed rate hike

Finance
Monday's stock market plunge dimmed traders' outlook that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates as much as it has indicated.Just a few weeks after the market finally had come around to the Fed's way of thinking that three quarter-point rate hikes would be appropriate this year, the day's trading changed sentiment. Traders on the fed funds futures market now are indicating a less than 50 percent chance that the central bank will move three times this year. That move came on a day when the Dow industrials saw their biggest intraday drop ever — a harrowing 1,500 point plunge that came amid worries over rising interest rates."If this market's going to behave like that that's going to put into question three to four hikes this year," said Ilya Feygin, senior strategist at WallachBeth Cap

Sports
Media playback is not supported on this device The Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl for the first time by beating the New England Patriots 41-33 in an extraordinary encounter in Minneapolis. On a night when records tumbled and the expected norms of an NFL game went out the window, the Eagles - led majestically by quarterback Nick Foles - produced a brilliant offensive display to deny the Patriots a record-equalling sixth Super Bowl crown.Zach Ertz's touchdown with less than three minutes remaining put the Eagles into a five-point lead, but it took Brandon Graham's sack on Tom Brady just moments later to seemingly put the game beyond the reigning champions. Even then the Eagles had to withstand a late march downfield by Brady, but vi...
