Cellular energy route finding may improve understanding of aging, chronic disease

Health
Jan. 7 (UPI) -- Scientists have found a cellular route for energy that could shed more light on how humans age and develop chronic diseases. Researchers from the Washington University of St. Louis have uncovered a once unknown path for nicotinamide mononucleotide, or NMN, which helps fuel the human body, according to a new study published Monday in Nature Metabolism. "To achieve such fast uptake of NMN into the tissues, we speculated that there must be a specific NMN transporter that moves NMN directly into cells, even though no one had ever seen such a thing," Shin-ichiro Imai, a professor of developmental biology at Washington University, said in a news release. For this protein highway, the researchers found that cells must create a molecular transport system. First, NMN provides energ...

Why understanding asset allocation is key

Finance
Most investors are extremely diligent in determining what investments should be a part of their portfolios. Certainly, you want to make sure that any specific security or fund is serving a purpose and is chosen because it has the potential to meet your needs and goals. However, what investors often overlook or neglect is their specific asset allocation. The truth is that the combination of investments in your portfolio can actually be more important to achieving your goals than the specific investments selected. Determining the mix of investment types is one of your most important tasks as an investor. Ev...

Understanding snorts can help horse caretakers improve animal welfare

Science
July 11 (UPI) -- Horses snort more when they're comfortable and happy. The communication could help caretakers achieve more positive animal welfare outcomes. Proper care for animals involves minimizing stress. But how do caretakers know when animals are happy or bothered? Interpreting the emotions of horses can be especially difficult. Many behavioral signals displayed by horses are ambiguous, and studies of physiological signals have yielded contradictory results. Many horse owners and caretakers have noted an association between snorting and positive environments, but the connection hadn't been scientifically tested until now. Researchers in France monitored snorting frequency among 48 horses. Half were riding horses, kept in confined environs and separated in solitary stalls. The othe...
