Jan. 10 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy announced it has inaugurated a new Navy Cyber Warfare Development Group Reserve unit. Deputy Commander Rear Adm. James Butler presided over the ceremony on Jan. 4 at Club Meade. "We at U.S. Fleet Cyber Command are determine to increase our competitive advantages over our nation's adversaries by focusing on our capabilities, processes, and mostly importantly, our people," Butler said in a statement. "This new Reserve unit will leverage reservists' skill sets to support the active duty NCWDG component and its overall mission to test and deliver advanced cyber, cryptologic and electronic warfare capabilities to the Navy." UK and Australia blame Russian unit GRU for cyberattacks

British and Australian officials said on Thursday the Russian military intelligence unit GRU is behind a wave of global cyberattacks. Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said Thursday the GRU is responsible for "indiscriminate and reckless" attacks against political institutions, businesses, media and sports. Britain's National Cyber Security Center has concluded that hackers behind numerous attacks have been identified as GRU personnel. The agency says four new attacks are associated with GRU as well as earlier cyberattacks. It cites attacks on the World Anti-Doping agency, Ukrainian transport systems, the 2016 U.S. presidential race and others as very likely the work of the GRU. March 7 (UPI) -- The U.S. military sent F-35B Lightning II aircraft this week to the East China Sea for the fighter's first operational deployment with a Marine Expeditionary Unit.A detachment of the aircraft deployed with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit landed Monday on the USS Wasp, an amphibious assault ship, according to the U.S. Marines. The expeditionary unit will patrol the Indo-Pacific region this spring.The F-35B aircraft, first deployed abroad to Japan, combines the ability for short takeoffs and vertical landings built specifically for the Marines.
