Regulators accuse California utility of gas pipeline violations, falsifying records

Dec. 15 (UPI) -- California regulators are investigating whether Pacific Gas and Electric continued to commit pipeline safety violations and falsified records eight years after an explosion killed eight people in the San Francisco Bay Area. PG&E, which serves 16 million people, also is facing class-action suits that it sparked the Camp Fire, which killed 86 people last month in Northern California. The utility could file for bankruptcy and regulators could recommend breaking up the company into one for gas operations and another for electricity operations. On Friday, the California Public Utilities Commission ordered an investigation into possible wrongdoing. Norwegian fund, German utility exchange barbs over coal mine

A Norwegian pension fund is doubling down on its criticism of German utility firm RWE over the power company's long-term plans to use coal. The chief executive of Storebrand, Jan Erik Saugestad, said Thursday that "continued expansion of coal mines and support of coal-fired power has no future" if the world wants to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius . Saugestad, whose company manages assets worth $ 85 billion, had called earlier this week for investors to sell their shares in RWE because of its plans to expand a coal mine by chopping down Germany's ancient Hambach forest .
