Washington Redskins release former second-round pick Noah Spence

Nov. 19 (UPI) -- The Washington Redskins released former Tampa Bay Buccaneers outside linebacker Noah Spence, the team announced Tuesday. The Redskins originally signed Spence in mid-September after the Buccaneers cut him at the end of training camp. Washington promoted linebacker Carroll Phillips from the practice squad in a corresponding roster move, according to the team. Tampa Bay selected Spence in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Eastern Kentucky. The franchise expected the pass-rusher to take on a bigger role after he recorded 5.5 sacks in his rookie season, but he has only notched two sacks in three seasons since his first year in the league. Oct. 15 (UPI) -- The Washington Nationals exploded for seven runs in the first inning and cruised to a 7-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night to sweep the NL Championship Series. With the victory, the wild-card Nationals advanced to the city's first World Series appearance in 86 years. The last time the World Series came to Washington was 1933, when the Washington Senators lost to the then-New York Giants in five games. The Nationals will play the winner of the Houston Astros-New York Yankees ALCS series, which is currently 2-1 in favor of Houston. Oct. 5 (UPI) -- The Washington Nationals held off a late comeback attempt to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-2 on Friday, evening the NL Division Series at one game apiece. Nationals starter Stephen Strasburg, who took a perfect game into the fifth, allowed only three hits and one earned run across six strong innings. He struck out 10 and walked none. Dodgers veteran pitcher Clayton Kershaw gave up three earned runs in the first two innings but settled down later in the contest. He allowed six hits in six innings, striking out four and walking one. Washington second baseman Howie Kendrick gave the Nationals a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single off Kershaw. Washington Wizards hire Tommy Sheppard as general manager

July 22 (UPI) -- Longtime Washington Wizards executive Tommy Sheppard has been promoted to general manager, the team announced Monday. Sheppard is entering his 17th season with the Wizards organization. He replaces Ernie Grunfield, who was fired in April. "My vision leading the Washington Wizards moving forward ... is to always collaborate with everybody in our basketball organization," Sheppard said in a video released by the team. Former Cleveland Browns general manager Sashi Brown has been hired as the chief planning and operations officer.
