China retaliates with sanctions for U.S. politicians over Xinjiang

July 13 (UPI) -- China on Monday announced sanctions targeting U.S. politicians in retaliation for the Trump administration's blacklisting Chinese government officials over human rights abuses against Muslim minorities in the Xinjiang region. U.S. Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom Samuel Brownback, Republican Sens. Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz and Republican Rep. Chris Smith were sanctioned as was the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Hua Chunying said during a daily news briefing on Monday. More than 20 countries at the UN Human Rights Council have signed a joint letter criticising China's treatment of ethnic Uighurs in the Xinjiang region.UN experts and rights groups say China is holding about one million Uighurs and other Muslims in detention camps.
