Finance
PM Narendra Modi on Friday said the government has a clear vision for the financial services sector and is taking steps to make it vibrant, proactive and strong and the top priority is to ensure trust and transparency for both the depositor and investor. PM Modi said the sector was hurt 10-12 years back due to aggressive lending and steps been taken under the current regime to take the country out of non-transparent credit culture. "Today instead of brushing NPAs under the carpet, we have made it mandatory to report even NPA of one day," he added. Aggressive testing, social distancing limits COVID-19 at U.S. military base, CDC reports

Health
June 2 (UPI) -- The limited spread of COVID-19 at a U.S. military base shows public health measures -- screening, testing, quarantining, social distancing and contact tracing -- offer some protection, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday. Efforts to prevent outbreaks of the disease caused by the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, among more than 10,000 new recruits arriving at the U.S. Air Force's Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, succeeded in limiting total confirmed cases to five through seven weeks. Advertisement Three of the five cases ultimately were traced to the first recruit on base to be diagnosed, officials said. The approaches used at the base could serve as a blueprint for other "congregate settings" like colleges and athletic programs, the CDC said...

Aggressive testing, quarantining can prevent COVID-19 outbreaks in senior facilities, study finds

Health
May 21 (UPI) -- Proactive testing and strict quarantining procedures at assisted-living facilities can help prevent outbreaks of COVID-19 among residents and the staff, a study published Thursday by JAMA Internal Medicine found. Taking this approach at an unnamed facility in Seattle effectively limited cases of the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, to six -- four among 80 residents and two among 62 staff members -- researchers said. "Assisted-living facilities are vulnerable to COVID-19, even though residents are in their own apartments, and older adults can be asymptomatic, so testing is key after an exposure to determine who may be infected," study co-author Dr. Alison C. Roxby, assistant professor of medicine and global health at the University of Washington, told UPI. Nursing homes, assis...

The Fed is still faltering on inflation, and one official is calling for ‘aggressive’ action

Finance
The Federal Reserve's more than decadelong quest to generate a healthy level of inflation continues to falter, even with the central bank's easing turn in 2019 that is targeted specifically at the issue. Not only has the Fed missed its 2% target for all of this year but it also now faces fading hopes that anything will change for at least the next several years. The expected inflation rate a year from now is 2.3%, according to the New York Fed's survey of consumer expectations released this week. While that number is technically ahead of the Fed's goal, it has consistently overshot the actual level throughout its existence, often by a full percentage point or more.October's reading represented a decline of 0.2 percentage point to 2.3%, the lowest level ever in a survey that goes back to June...

The most aggressive spider societies don't always thrive

Science
March 25 (UPI) -- When colonies of the same spider species must compete for resources, the most aggressive spider society doesn't always thrive. New research suggests the success of a particular colony's success depends on the disposition of its neighbors. The African social spider Stegodyphus dumicola lives in colonies. Some spider colonies exhibit aggressive behavior, while others are more docile. African social spiders from different colonies don't compete face-to-face, but different colonies living in the plant compete for the same flying insects. Some colonies thrive, while others fail. "Consider the coordinated attacks of prides of lions or wolves, or the dazzling swirling behavior of starlings or schools of sardines," Jonathan Pruitt, an evolutionary biologist at the University of...
