Health
Dec. 3 (UPI) -- The effectiveness of new vaccines developed to prevent COVID-19 likely depends on how well they are distributed and the degree to which the public is willing to take them, public health experts from Johns Hopkins University and Duke University said Thursday. The comments came on the same day the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices published its recommendations on who should receive the initial doses of vaccine. Advertisement The new guidelines suggest that the nation's 21 million healthcare workers -- as well as the 3 million residents of long-term care facilities, which have seen disproportionate numbers of COVID-19 cases and deaths -- should receive priority. ‘My ability to see depends on men giving blood’

‘My ability to see depends on men giving blood’

Health
A woman who would lose her vision if there was not enough male blood available to treat her condition is urging more men to donate. Jo Daniels, 39, from Bristol, has the autoimmune disease Sjogren's syndrome, which attacks her tear glands and leaves her with painful ulcers on her corneas. She uses a daily eye serum, made from male blood, to keep her sight. Only 41% of new blood donors in England last year were men. The high level of iron present in male blood makes it especially helpful to patients who rely on regular life-saving transfusions. Unlike men, women produce antibodies during pregnancy which makes their blood unviable for numerous specialist transfusions and blood-based products, such as complete blood transfusions in newborn babies. 'In the da...

The report found that 32 percent of workers said they have had a raise or seen increased benefits in the past year. Workers in the Midwest and New England were more likely to say that is the case. Areas where worke...
