Scientists have identified a green light in the atmosphere of Mars.A similar glow is sometimes seen by astronauts on the space station when they look to the Earth's limb.The glow comes from oxygen atoms when they're excited by sunlight.The phenomenon has long been predicted to occur on other planets, but the Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) - a joint European-Russian satellite at Mars - is the first to make the observation beyond Earth. Two people are being treated in Scotland for the potentially deadly diphtheria infection.NHS Lothian has confirmed the two cases are related and both patients are thought to be in hospital in Edinburgh.The health board said those involved had recently returned from overseas.Public health experts said the likelihood of any additional cases was very small, as most people were protected by immunisation given in childhood. Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Scientists have found a climate signature in the planet's rivers. Climate dictates many of Earth's geologic and hydrological systems, but scientists have struggled to pinpoint the influence of climate on the formation of rivers. Now, researchers have uncovered evidence suggesting climate controls the elevational profile of rivers across the globe. An elevational profile, or long profile, is formed by tracing a river from its headwaters to its mouth. Most rivers fall steeply from the uplands before flattening in the lowlands. The pattern produces a concave up shape. Less common is a straight long profile, which if formed by a river that descends evenly in elevation, like a ramp from mountain to sea.
