May 18 (UPI) -- Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Starling Marte announced Monday that his wife, Noelia, has died of a heart attack. "Today I go through the great pain of making public the unfortunate death of my wife Noelia, due to a heart attack," Marte wrote on social media. "It is a moment of indescribable pain. On behalf of my family, I am grateful for the expressions of esteem and solidarity in this difficult time." Noelia suffered the heart attack as she was awaiting surgery for a broken ankle, according to MLB Network. The couple has three young children: sons Starling Jr. and Smerling and a daughter, Tiana. "We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Noelia Marte," the Diamondbacks said in a statement. "Starling and his family are part of the D-Backs' family and we w...

PHOENIX -- Give Arizona left-hander Robbie Ray an "A" in self-evaluation. Ray won his final six regular-season decisions in 2017 after missing a month with a concussion suffered when he was struck in the head by a line drive in St. Louis on July 28. Then last Wednesday, he spun six scoreless innings in a 2-1 victory over Florida in his first start after missing 58 days with an oblique injury. Ray will face the Cardinals again on Monday, in the first game of a three-game series at Chase Field. Right-hander Carlos Martinez will start for the Cardinals. "Obviously, I'm not going to go out there if I don't feel 100 percent," said Ray, a first-time All-Star in 2017. "There is a constant line of communication between me and Torey (manager Lovullo). He was open with me. He wanted me to make...

WASHINGTON -- With their ninth straight series victory safely in hand, the Arizona Diamondbacks go for the sweep against the Washington Nationals on Sunday. The West Division-leading Diamondbacks (19-7) rallied from a 3-2 deficit to post a 4-3 10-inning victory Saturday to become only the second team to win their first nine series of the season, trailing only the 1907 Chicago Cubs, who won 11 straight. David Peralta homered twice for Arizona, and A.J. Pollock drove in the tying run with an eighth-inning single and the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning. "When you have a good team you never feel like you're out of the game," Pollock said. "You don't know who it's gonna be, but we've had a lot of different guys step up during the year and we feel like if we're close at ...

MLB probes potential use of smartwatch by Arizona Diamondbacks coach

Major League Baseball may have another issue with smartwatches on its hands. The league is investigating the potential use of a smartwatch by Arizona Diamondbacks coach/translator Ariel Prieto during Wednesday's National League wild-card game against the Colorado Rockies, according to the New York Post. Wearing a smartwatch violates baseball's rules regarding the use of electronic devices. Prieto told AZSports that he made a mistake by wearing his Apple Watch in the dugout during Wednesday's game, but his reasoning for doing so dealt with routine rather than use. "My watch has been in airplane mode for about two days," Prieto said. "If they want to take my Apple Watch, take my phone, they can do it. I wasn't doing anything. I know it's a rule, I know I missed that, but if they want to inve...
