Male, female orangutans look to different mentors for sex-specific ecological knowledge

Male, female orangutans look to different mentors for sex-specific ecological knowledge

Science
May 19 (UPI) -- Young male and female orangutans look to different individuals for sex-specific ecological knowledge as they mature, according to new research. Often, studies of sexual differences focuses on mating behavior and social organization, but field observations suggest male and female orangutans also demonstrate sex-specific foraging and dispersal patterns. Advertisement To better understand how these behaviors are acquired, researchers analyzed 15 years worth of data on dietary and social learning behaviors exhibited by 50 young orangutans living among two different Sumatran populations. Scientists shared their findings Wednesday in the journal PLOS Biology. "In our study we showed that immature orangutans show sex specific attentional preferences when observing role models ot...

Lessons from the Gita for market practitioners: Different paths to the same goal

As you grow older, your reading pattern changes. I find myself engaging in more of spiritual reading and, of course, many of those texts are based on concepts from the Bhagavad Gita. Reading some parts, I was struck by the relevance that some of the observations in that great text can have for financial markets. This is a bad habit I have, of taking every good thing of life and transporting those into the market context, because I try and draw a lot of parallels between how you live and lead your life and how you act and perform in the markets. In Chapter 12 of the Gita, Arjuna asks Krishna as to which form of worship will be more preferred – whether through the form of the Lord or through meditation on the formless nature of the Lord. While the Lord answers Arjuna in different ways to mak...

Carey Mulligan on The Dig: ‘Platonic leads are very rare on screen… This is different’

Entertainment
When I suggest to the director of The Dig that a film about archaeology isn't usual blockbuster fare, he quite rightly reminds me that "Lara Croft and Indiana Jones were pretty big box office hits".Simon Stone has a point - and while digging a hole and poking about in the mud may not seem action-packed - the lure of buried treasure and hidden mysteries from the past does have a unique attraction. And for those who don't know their Sutton Hoo history, the real-life discovery of an Anglo-Saxon ghost ship filled with riches, weaponry and armour in Suffolk back in 1939 was a fairly big deal.
