Coronavirus: H&M to close 250 shops as Covid drives sales online

Business
The world's second biggest fashion retailer, Sweden's H&M, says it plans to cut 250 of its stores globally. The closures will come next year after the firm said the Covid-19 pandemic had moved more shoppers online.Although it said sales had continued to recover in September, they were still 5% lower than the same month in 2019.The firm has 5,000 stores worldwide, but it is not yet clear how many closures will be in the UK.H&M has the contractual right to renegotiate or end leases on about a quarter of its stores every year. Eat Out to Help Out drives UK inflation to five-year low

Business
The UK's inflation rate fell sharply to a five-year low of 0.2% in August as the effect of the Eat Out to Help Out scheme pushed down restaurant prices.July's Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation figure had been 1%.The VAT cut in the hospitality sector from 20% to 5% was also a factor, said the Office for National Statistics.Low inflation - the rate at which prices of everyday goods and services rise - is good for consumers and borrowers, but can be bad for savers. That is because it affects the interest rates set by banks and other financial institutions. The eating out scheme, which ran from Monday to Wednesday in August, offered 50% off food up to the value of £10.Discounts for more than 100 million meals were claimed through the scheme.Prices in restau...

Virus crisis drives largest UK recession on record

Business
The UK has been tipped into the "largest recession on record", according to official figures charting the impact of the coronavirus crisis on the economy. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that the enforced hibernation of activity through the COVID-19 lockdown meant gross domestic product (GDP) slumped by 20.4% in the second quarter of the year following a dip of 2.2% during the first three months of 2020. It determined that, by the end of June, the economy was a sixth below February's pre-crisis level - as a monthly recovery for growth, which began in May, gathered further momentum during June. April proved the biggest drag as it was the first full month of curbs on non-essential businesses and services but was followed by month-on-month growth of 2.4% in May and 8.7% durin...

Pat Riley’s vision for Bam Adebayo drives Heat playoff hopes

Sports
MIAMI, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Miami Heat president Pat Riley's vision to transform 6-foot-9 center Bam Adebayo into a smooth playmaker has come to fruition. Now, the Heat's excavation of Adebayo's potential has the team in position for a playoff run. "Pat [Riley] told me they were going to put the ball in his hands and they wanted him to be 50% [better] than what he was at Kentucky," said John Calipari, who coached Adebayo at Kentucky before he was drafted by the Heat. Advertisement "I've seen him do things now that I only saw in spurts when he was in high school and here." Adebayo's unique versatility, which creates space on the floor on the offensive end, has been integral to the Heat's success. Adebayo still uses his 255-pound frame as a dominant interior player, but defenders must respect hi...
