Getty ImagesBy Jonathan AmosScience correspondentThe UK is to rejoin the EU's flagship scientific research scheme, Horizon, the government has announced.UK-based scientists and institutions will be able to apply for money from the £81bn (€95bn) fund from today. Associate membership had been agreed as part of the Brexit trade deal when the UK formally left the EU in 2020.However, the UK has been excluded from the scheme for the past three years because of a disagreement over the Northern Ireland Protocol.Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said: "With a wealth of expertise and experience to bring to the global stage, we have delivered a deal that enables UK scientists to confidently take part in the world's largest research collaboration programme."We have worked with our EU partners to make sure th...

Event Horizon Telescope: Black hole produces twisting jet

Science
One year on from publishing the first ever image of a black hole, the team behind that historic breakthrough is back with a new picture. This time we're being shown the base of a colossal jet of excited gas, or plasma, screaming away from another black hole at near light-speed.The scene was actually in the "background" of the original target. The scientists who operate the Event Horizon Telescope describe the jet in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics. They say their studies of the region of space known as 3C 279 will help them better understand the physics that drives behaviour in the vicinity of black holes.3C 279 is what astronomers term a quasar - the extremely bright core of a very distan...

Deepwater Horizon oil spill was bigger than previously thought, study finds

Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Oil from the Deepwater Horizon disaster spread well beyond the spill footprint established by satellites, according to new analysis by scientists at the University of Miami. To determine the true size of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, researchers supplied oil-transport models with water sampling results and remote sensing data. The simulations confirmed that a portion of the oil spilled in the wake of the deadly explosion remained invisible to satellites, but proved toxic to marine wildlife. "We found that there was a substantial fraction of oil invisible to satellites and aerial imaging," Igal Berenshtein, lead author of the new study and a postdoctoral researcher at Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, said in a news release. "The spill w...

PeskyMonkey | iStock | Getty ImagesThe bull market in U.S. stocks rolls on.From the trade war between the U.S. and China and the slowdown in global economic growth, to Britain's messy exit from the European Union and the potential impeachment of President Trump, nothing has dampened the enthusiasm for stocks. The American economy remains in the midst of the longest economic expansion on record and the longest — if not strongest — bull market in stocks. Despite some concerns about higher volatility from a range of potential factors, registered investment advisors expect 2020 could be another good year for both the economy and the stock market."The cycle has been long but the economy has also been slower than in past cycles and without the big imbalances we've seen previously," said Alan Cohn...

Watch live: Scientists to unveil images of supermassive black hole’s event horizon

Science
April 10 (UPI) -- An international team of scientists is expected to share the first images of a supermassive black hole captured by the Event Horizon Telescope on Wednesday morning. During a press conference, researchers with the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration will present a "groundbreaking result," according to a press release. The collaboration involved the efforts of astronomers from all over the globe. Multiple teams worked to coordinate the observations of eight radio telescopes using Very Long Baseline Interferometry. "This technique of linking radio dishes across the globe to create an Earth-sized interferometer, has been used to measure the size of the emission regions of the two supermassive black holes with the largest apparent event horizons," according to EHT. Six pr...
