Owls may have inherited their night-hunting abilities from dinosaurs

Science
May 6 (UPI) -- New research suggests a small bird-like dinosaur's exacting night vision and owl-like hearing allowed it to track down prey in the black of night. Nocturnal hunting is relatively rare among predators, as it requires specialized sensory abilities -- many of the best night-hunters are birds, including owls, nightjars, nighthawks and more. Advertisement Because modern birds are the closest living relatives of the dinosaurs, scientists have previously surmised that the night-hunting capabilities of owls and other nocturnal birds might be inherited from their theropod ancestors. To investigate the possibility, scientists used detailed CT scans to compare the anatomical features of the eyes and inner ears of nearly 100 living bird and extinct dinosaur species. They shared the re...
Parents’ ‘memory’ of environmental stress inherited across generations

Parents’ ‘memory’ of environmental stress inherited across generations

Science
July 9 (UPI) -- While actual memories aren't passed along to offspring, new research suggests the genetic effects of environmental stressors experienced by parents can be inherited across generations. The findings, published this week in the journal eLife, offer a new perspective on the nature-versus-nurture debate. "While neuronally encoded behavior isn't thought to be inherited across generations, we wanted to test the possibility that environmentally triggered modifications could allow 'memory' of parental experiences to be inherited," Julianna "Lita" Bozler, a doctoral candidate in the Bosco Lab at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, said in a news release. For their experiment, researchers exposed fruit flies, Drosophilia melanogaster, to parasitoid wasps, which deposit thei...

Inherited brain activity may guide treatment for autism, ADHD

Health
Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Oregon Health & Science University researchers have found that functional brain connectivity has both familial and heritable associations. The study, published today in Network Neuroscience, used two data sets of MRI brain scans from more than 350 adult and child siblings to assess their identity based on connectotype, or the pattern of functional brain connectivity."Similar to DNA, specific brain systems and connectivity patterns are passed down from adults to their children," Dr. Damien Fair, an associate professor of behavioral neuroscience and psychiatry at OHSU's School of Medicine, said in a press release. "This is significant because it may help us to better characterize aspects of altered brain activity, development or disease."Researchers were able to determine ...
Gene editing could wipe out inherited diseases

Gene editing could wipe out inherited diseases

Technology
Scientists have successfully altered a piece of defective DNA in human embryos to prevent them from developing heart disease. It's the first time a mutation that causes a common inherited disease has been fixed using a gene-editing tool. The trial's success raises the prospect of gene editing being used to prevent thousands of inherited conditions from being passed down through generations in the future. The procedure is highly controversial and there is no question of the technique being used to create babies with the genetic modification, as this would be illegal in both the US and the UK.The research, published in the journal Nature, was carried out by scientists in the US at Oregon Health and Science University and the Salk Institute and at the Institute for Basic Science in South Korea.E...
