Jet pack paramedic suit tested in the Lake District

Technology
Jet pack paramedics could soon be a reality, after a successful test flight took place over the Lake District.Gravity Industries has been testing the capabilities of its jet pack-suit in emergency situations in Cumbria, which can travel at speeds of up to 32mph (51kmph), alongside the local air ambulance service. Footage of the test flight shows the pilot seemingly flying over the Lake District with ease to rescue a patient in 90 seconds, with devices attached to his arms and legs. ...

Lake Titicaca giant frog: Scientists join forces to save species

Science
Five scientific institutions are joining forces in a cross-border effort to preserve the Lake Titicaca giant frog (Telmatobius culeus). The frog is one of the world's largest exclusively aquatic frogs and lives in the waters of Lake Titicaca, which straddles the border between Peru and Bolivia. The aim of the project is to ensure the future of the endangered frog. The amphibian is threatened by pollution from mining and also by its use in traditional medicine. The scientists will study the habitat of the Lake Titicaca giant frog and also carry out genetic analyses to find out how to best protect the species. The frog lives its entire life in the waters of Lake Titicaca and nearby lagoons. It has loose, baggy skin which ripp...
Melting Himalayan glaciers increase risk for glacial lake outburst floods

Melting Himalayan glaciers increase risk for glacial lake outburst floods

Science
Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Simulations designed and run by researchers at the University of Potsdam suggest thousands of lakes in the Himalayas are at risk of generating dangerous outburst floods as rising global temperatures continue to melt the region's snow and ice. Glacial lakes form as melt water pools in mountain crevices. These natural lakes have proliferated throughout the Himalayas over the last two decades as global temperatures have continued to rise. Many of these lakes are naturally dammed by moraines, barriers compiled of sediment and rock held together by ice. To estimate the number of glacial lakes that are dammed by unstable moraines, researchers ran 5.4 billion computer simulations using data from topographical maps and satellite surveys. Their models found 5,000 lakes feature un...

Brain-eating amoeba kills man who swam in NC manmade lake

Health
A North Carolina man has died from a rare brain-eating amoeba after swimming in a manmade lake at a water park, officials said Wednesday. The state Department of Health and Human Resources said in a news release that the infection was caused by the amoeba naturally present in warm freshwater during the summer. The unnamed person became sick after swimming in Fantasy Lake Water Park in Hope Mills in Cumberland County on July 12. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed it was caused by Naegleria fowleri, a single-celled organism known as the brain-eating amoeba. It can be fatal if forced up the nose but does not cause illness if swallowed. Symptoms typically begin with severe headache, fever, nausea and vomiting and progress to stiff neck, seizures and coma. The amo...
