The U.S. Coast Guard is tapping into cellphone location data to provide a new tool for helping distressed boatersByThe Associated PressMay 10, 2020, 12:57 PM2 min read2 min readShare to FacebookShare to TwitterEmail this articleBOSTON -- The U.S. Coast Guard is tapping into cellphone location data to quickly locate distressed boaters. The voluntary i911 program lets the Coast Guard access mariners' cellphone locations to help rescue crews find them faster. The software is a free service for all first responders, including the Coast Guard. “It greatly decreases the time we spend looking for someone and gets the rescue crews out faster,” said Chief Petty Officer Andrew Case from the Coast Guard center in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Would you give up health or location data to return to work?

WASHINGTON -- Cameron Karosis usually strives to protect his personal information. But a scary bout of COVID-19 that began last month with headaches and fevers, progressed to breathing problems and led to a hospital visit has now left him eager to disclose as much as possible to help halt the virus’ spread. Karosis has already shared personal details with Massachusetts health investigators. And if he was asked to comply with a disease-tracking phone app that monitored his whereabouts but didn’t publicly reveal his name and Cambridge street address, he said he’d do that, too. “I’m sick and I’m under a quarantine -- hold me accountable for it,” the 27-year-old software salesman said. “You have the potential to kill other people.” As countries around the world edge toward ending lockdowns ...

The location of neurons within the cortex affects how they process information

Science
Nov. 21 (UPI) -- How neurons process information is dependent on their positioning within the cortex, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Queensland. Until now, neuroscientists agreed the microcircuits of neurons found in the brain's outermost layer, the cortex, functioned and interacted in a standardized way. Scientists thought the miniature circuits were more or less all the same. But some researchers were skeptical. To find out if the same types of neurons performed the same functions, regardless of their location, scientists at the University of Queensland set out to measure the influence of cortex's structural characteristics on neuronal patterns. The new survey revealed a surprising level of structural variety within the cortex. Researchers found the cortex ...
