Experts pitch surveillance system to detect viruses in wildlife before next pandemic

Science
July 9 (UPI) -- Scientific experts said Thursday that a wildlife surveillance system must be developed before the next pandemic emerges. Evidence shows the virus that causes COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, came from bats that likely passed the virus onto another species before infecting humans, according to the World Health Organization. Advertisement Infectious disease experts, ecologists, wildlife biologists and other experts argue, in a paper published in the journal Science, that a decentralized global system of wildlife surveillance must be established before the next pandemic. "It's impossible to know how often animal viruses spill over into the human population, but coronaviruses alone have caused outbreaks in people three times in the last 20 years," co-author Jennifer Philips said in a pre...

Europa League final in Baku: Far from the pitch and a long way from home – the surreal final

Sports
The next time Uefa wants to take a showpiece club final to a new footballing outpost, they could always try the moon.It cannot be that much more inaccessible than Baku proved to be for UK-based Chelsea and Arsenal fans, and the atmosphere will surely be better than it was at the half-empty Olympic Stadium on Wednesday too.Things did improve as a spectacle once the star man, Eden Hazard, decided to put his stamp on proceedings, but until then it seemed that this would be a final that reflected its build-up - unhappy, and strangely surreal. One of the few chants before half-time that could be heard echoing across the covered-up athletic track that forms the perimeter of the pitch came from the ...

Yesterday, ex-England and Liverpool midfielder John Barnes phoned talkSPORT to discuss the idea of players walking off the field due to racism.  However, Southgate drew the line at making a stand by walking off during any of their matches in Russia as it would threaten their participation in the tournament. "People in an idealistic world would say you should do that, and it seems the realities are that you would be thrown out," Southgate said a...

Why Pitch Perfect stands out in Hollywood

Why Pitch Perfect stands out in Hollywood

Entertainment
Pitch Perfect 3 is outstanding. Quite literally. Not only is the third instalment of the successful film franchise highly entertaining - but also highly unusual for Hollywood.Seeing an all-female ensemble cast in a storyline where the main objective isn't finding a boyfriend is something you don't often see.Which is perhaps why the movies have become so popular. "I distinctly remember seeing the first one in the cinema and just feeling so great afterwards," says Hailee Steinfeld, who joined the cast in Pitch Perfect 2 and reprises her role in the third."I loved every minute of it, loved the musical aspect, I thought the relationships within the movie were so interesting and fun. I remember thinking if there's ever a movie like this I have to be a part of it."Media playback is unsupported o...
