Navy identifies missing sailor after Arabian Sea overboard incident

July 22 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy identified Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd Class Slayton Saldana as missing on Monday after a reported overboard incident in the Arabian Sea. Saldana, assigned to a helicopter squadron aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, is listed as "Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown" by the U.S. 5th Fleet. His ship is the leader of a strike group of ships patrolling the Arabian Sea in support of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command. Saldana is believed to have gone overboard in the early hours, local time, on July 17. Attempts to find him on board failed, and a sea search, involving the USS Abraham Lincoln, the guided-missile cruiser Leyte Gulf, Patrol Squadrons 10 and 40 and the Spanish guided-missile frigate Méndez Nunez failed to locate him. April 13 (UPI) -- A U.S. Navy sailor and a Japan woman were found stabbed to death Saturday in a suspected murder-suicide in an apartment on the Japanese Island of Okinawa, police said. The sailor, 31, apparently killed the woman, who was in her 30s, and then himself, Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister Takeo Akiba said in a statement obtained by CNN. The names of the couple, who were believed to be in a romantic relationship,. were not announced. The woman's child was unharmed in the apartment during incident and called a relative, who then notified police at 7:26 a.m., a police spokesman said, according to Stars and Stripes. Nov. 8 (UPI) -- The remains of a U.S. Navy sailor killed in action during Japan's surprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor was laid to rest in Guam on Thursday. Steward Mate 1st Class Ignacio Camacho Farfan's recently identified remains were returned to the island of Guam where he was born and raised before he joined the Navy at age 19 in 1939. He was interred at the Guam Veterans Cemetery at Piti. A sailor who suffered a crippling back injury during a solo round-the-world race has been rescued in the Indian Ocean. Abhilash Tomy was rescued by a French fishing vessel, Osiris, on Monday amid an international effort coordinated by Australia.The 39-year-old skipper injured his back badly and was unable to move after a storm rolled his boat 360 degrees during the Golden Globe Race on Friday.Both masts on his 36ft-long (11m) classic yacht, Thuriya, were taken down by the storm and were seen hanging over the vessel's side.
