Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd: Alisson saves thwart leaders at Anfield

Manchester United "missed an opportunity" to beat Liverpool, said boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after his side stayed top of the Premier League with a goalless draw against the champions. It was a game that failed to justify the pre-match anticipation and Solskjaer will know his side had the better chances to claim a statement victory at Anfield.Liverpool, without a recognised centre-back and with midfielders Jordan Henderson and Fabinho in defence, dominated possession in the first half but it was United who came closest when Bruno Fernandes' 20-yard free-kick curled inches wide.Fernandes was then thwarted after the break by the outstretched leg of Liverpool keeper Alisson before Thiago's long-range effort finally brought the previously unemployed David de Gea into action.Alisson was Liverpool...

Air Force saves $7M on fuel for KC-135 by turning windshield wipers vertical

Business
April 20 (UPI) -- Windshield wiper blades mounted vertically on a KC-135 Stratotanker's windshield can save about $ 7 million in annual fuel costs, a U.S. Air Force test concluded. Aerodynamic drag is reduced by about 1 percent, under cruise conditions, when the wipers are left upright on the windshield, the Air Force said in a statement on Monday. It could potentially save $ 7 million annually in fuel costs for the 398 KC-135 planes in the Air Force fleet. "While one percent efficiency may not seem like a lot, it equates to millions of dollars in fuel savings each year, which can then be re-invested into other programs," Daniel Pike, acquisition manager and chief of future operations for Air Force Operational Energy, said in a press release. "When you combine the results of optimization...

Closing coal plants saves lives, boosts crop yields

Science
Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Over the last two decades, dozens of coal plants in the United States have shuttered. The earliest victims were mostly the smallest, oldest plants, but more recently, even some of the country's largest coal plants have closed their doors. New research suggests the reductions in coal pollution are not only helping save American lives, but also boosting crop yields. According to a new study, as coal plants closed -- many of them, replaced by natural gas plants -- local pollution levels have dropped. In addition to emitting CO2, coal plants also produce more particulate matter and ozone, two main components of smog, one of the most common forms of air pollution. Studies have linked smog with a variety of human ailments, including lung disease, heart disease, stroke and cance...
