Canadian billionaire Prem Watsa-backed is targeting a 30% growth on its Rs 13,000-crore loan book. The bank is reworking a retail strategy after industry veteran Pralay Mondal joined the leadership team at the end of last year. While continuing to bank on gold loans as primary growth driver, the bank is set to target opportunities in the SME, two wheeler and secured loan segments. Retail head Mondal told ET in an interview that the bank is targeting to grow at 25-30% in the next few years to ramp up its assets and liabilities base. “Gold loan is a high yielding business; so we will continue to focus on that segment along with strong push on SME loans, especially because of the Covid emergency guarantee loan scheme, two wheeler loans, education loans, loans against property, small business...

Aggressive testing, quarantining can prevent COVID-19 outbreaks in senior facilities, study finds

May 21 (UPI) -- Proactive testing and strict quarantining procedures at assisted-living facilities can help prevent outbreaks of COVID-19 among residents and the staff, a study published Thursday by JAMA Internal Medicine found. Taking this approach at an unnamed facility in Seattle effectively limited cases of the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, to six -- four among 80 residents and two among 62 staff members -- researchers said. "Assisted-living facilities are vulnerable to COVID-19, even though residents are in their own apartments, and older adults can be asymptomatic, so testing is key after an exposure to determine who may be infected," study co-author Dr. Alison C. Roxby, assistant professor of medicine and global health at the University of Washington, told UPI. Nursing homes, assis...

BENGALURU: The prospect of six public sector banks losing their identity following their merger with other lenders is giving anxious moments to long-term customers, particularly senior citizens. Their fear is the closure of the next-door branch and having to deal with a new bank with new systems following the mega-mergers announced by the government in August 2019. For 71-year-old Debabrata Ghosh and his wife Keya (60), who live in Asansol, 210 km from Kolkata, the announcement of bank mergers has been unsettling and disturbing. The couple has for decades banked with Allahabad Bank. But their bank will soon be merged with Indian Bank, which also has its own branches. Fearing the necessity of having to travel a distance of 15-16 km, the couple — who suffer from chronic severe back pain — ha...

Mumbai: Close to 70 senior bank executives are in the fray to occupy the corner room office of the chief executive and managing director of the Tamil Nadu-based lender Laxmi Vilas Bank. The Chennai-headquartered mid-sized private sector bank has been headless since mid-September after the then chief executive Parathasarathy Mukherjee left before the completion of his three-year term. The bank, which has been placed under the prompt corrective action by the monetary authority since August for low capital buffer and higher NPAs coupled and mounting losses, is scheduled to complete the process by November 10. “We have received as many as 68 applications for the post of chief executive and managing director, signalling higher interest in the nearly 100-year- old private sector bank,” a bank so...
