Astrophysicists observe one of the most powerful short gamma-ray bursts ever

Science
Aug. 5 (UPI) -- The collision of two distant neutron stars released one of the most powerful short gamma-ray bursts ever recorded, scientists say. The collision marked the first time scientists have recorded millimeter-wavelength light from a fiery explosion to be caused by the merger of a neutron star with another star. It was observed on Nov. 6, 2021. The observation was made with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, or ALMA, in Chile. ALMA is an international observatory operated by the National Science Foundation's National Radio Astronomy Observatory. "Afterglows for short bursts are very difficult to come by, so it was spectacular to catch this event shining so brightly," ALMA principal investigator Wen-fai Fong said in a statement. "After many years observing these bu...

Israel election: Netanyahu falls short of majority amid vote count

ReutersIsraeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu could struggle to secure enough seats in parliament to stay in power, incomplete results from Tuesday's election show. With about 90% of votes counted, his right-wing bloc is course to win 59 seats - two short of the threshold. In a surprise development, an Arab party which is projected to win five seats could hold the balance of power. The final outcome will among other things determine the course of Israel's relations with the Palestinians. The Arab party, Raam, has not declared whether it will support the efforts of Mr Netanyahu - an unnatural ally - to form a government or those of the bloc opposed to him remaining in office. Those parties have garnered 56 seats, according to the latest tally, and although backing from Raam could give them a sufficient n...

The US Senate has fallen short of the two-thirds majority needed to convict former President Donald Trump on a charge of incitement to insurrection over the Capitol riot on 6 January.A majority of senators - 57 to 43, including seven Republicans - voted to convict Mr Trump, 10 votes short of the 67 required for conviction. After his acquittal, Mr Trump released a statement denouncing the trial as "the greatest witch hunt in history". This was Mr Trump's second impeachment. What verdict means for Trump, Biden and AmericaDid Trump's words at rally incite violence?'They thought they were going to die'If he had been convicted, the Senate could have voted to bar him from running for office ever again. After the vote, the senior Republican in Congress, Senator Mitch McConnell said Mr Trump was "...

Short selling: What it is, why it’s risky and how the ‘squeeze’ happens

Finance
Aimee Dilger | SOPA Images | LightRocket | Getty ImagesMaybe you've heard by now that an army of retail investors has managed to use one of hedge funds' common investment strategies against them. That is, short-selling. It generally involves selling borrowed shares of a stock with the belief that the price will drop, at which point you'd buy shares at a lower price to repay what you borrowed (more farther below). And it's not the province of just hedge funds or other large investment entities. Individual investors — for better or worse — can employ it, too, if their brokerage approves it."For my clients who want to short stocks, I tell them it's generally not a good idea," said certified financial planner Ivory Johnson, founder of Delancey Wealth Management in Washington. More from Per...

Federal agencies fall short of Trump forest protection goals

Technology
Nearly two years ago, President Donald Trump stood amid the smoky ruins of Paradise, California, where he blamed the deadliest wildfire in the state's history on poor forest management."You've got to take care of the floors, you know? The floors of the forest, very important," the president said.He ordered the U.S. Forest Service and the Department of Interior to make federal lands less susceptible to catastrophic wildfires with measures such as removing dead trees, underbrush and other potentially flammable materials. But while Trump has accused California and Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom of doing a “terrible job” of forest protection, his own agencies fell short of his goals for federal lands in 2019.They treated a combined 6,736 square miles (17,446 square kilometers) — just ove...
