Sierra Nevada awarded $42.7M to train Afghan Air Force on A-29 Super Tucano

April 5 (UPI) -- Sierra Nevada Corp. has been awarded a $ 42.7 million contract for A-29 Super Tucano pilot and maintenance training for Afghanistan's Air Force. The contract is for five years, according to a Thursday announcement by the Department of Defense. The training, which is expected to be completed by Dec. 31, 2023, will be performed at Moody Air Base, Ga., and in Afghanistan. Fiscal 2019 building partner capacity/pseudo-foreign military sales funds in the amount of $ 5.6 million have been obligated at the time of award. The planes are built in Jacksonville, Fla., in a partnership between Sierra Nevada Corporation and Brazil's Embraer. March 28 (UPI) -- Sierra Nevada Corp. was awarded a $ 317 million contract for logistics support of armaments on the AC-130 attack aircraft, the Defense Department announced. The contract, announced this week, covers logistics support for the Precision Strike Package aboard the AC-130W and AC-130J. The munitions package includes a trainable 30-millimeter cannon, electro-optical and infrared sensors, special operations forces-specific communications equipment, and an integrated fire control and mission management system Work on the contract will be performed at Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico and Hurlburt Field, Fla., with an expected completion date of Sept. 30, 2026. April 5 (UPI) -- Opposition candidate Julius Maada Bio won a runoff election to become president of Sierra Leone and took the oath of office within hours of his victory.Maada Bio, 53, of the Sierra Leone People's Party, won the race with 51.8 percent of the vote over his opponent in the ruling All People's Congress Party, Dr. Samura Kamara, who got 48.2 percent. Shortly after being declared president, Maada Bio took his oath of office in a hotel instead of the State House on Wednesday.The Constitution says the presidential election winner must be sworn in the same day.Maada Bio led the country for about three months in 1996 after seizing power in a military coup.
