‘Invisible’ words reveal common structure among famous stories

Science
Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Storytelling requires a narrative arc, but the trajectory of a dramatic arc isn't always obvious. By tracing the abundance of "invisible" words -- pronouns, articles and other short words -- researchers were able to identify patterns shared by a diversity of stories, from Shakespeare to Spielberg, according to a study published Friday in Science Advances. Advertisement "Over the years, these 'invisible' words have been found to be related to a whole mess of psychological processes -- how people use small words like articles and pronouns tell us about a person's mental health, thinking style, their social status, and even how well they get along with other people," study lead author Ryan Boyd told UPI. "In many ways, it was a natural progression to look at what these words ...

Space Force details structure of newly created service

Business
June 30 (UPI) -- The Space Force will be comprised of three field commands, with many of the Air Force's existing space acquisition organizations being moved into a newly created Space Systems Command, the service announced on Tuesday. USSF officials said the field organization would "consolidate and align all organize, train and equip mission execution" from space-related units formerly run by the Air Force. Advertisement "This is an historic opportunity to launch the Space Force on the right trajectory to deliver the capabilities needed to ensure freedom of movement and deter aggression in, from and to space," Gen. Jay Raymond, USSF chief of space operations, said in a press release. "How we organize the Space Force will have a lasting impact on our ability to respond with speed and agi...

Voyagers shed light on Solar System’s structure

Science
Data sent back by the two Voyager spacecraft have shed new light on the structure of the Solar System.Forty-two years after they were launched, the spacecraft are still going strong and exploring the outer reaches of our cosmic neighbourhood.By analysing data sent back by the probes, scientists have worked out the shape of the vast magnetic bubble that surrounds the Sun.The two spacecraft are now more than 10 billion miles from Earth.Researchers detail their findings in six separate studies published in the journal Nature Astronomy."We had no good quantitative idea how big this bubble is that the Sun creates around itself with its solar wind - ionised plasma that's speeding away from the Sun radially in all directions," said Ed S...

Chemists find better way to manipulate 3D structure of molecules

Science
Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Scientists have developed a more efficient and effective way to manipulate the 3D structure of molecules, a breakthrough that could improve the process of discovering and designing new drugs. The breakthrough builds on the work of chemist Akira Suzuki, who won a Nobel prize for his development of palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions. Suzuki and his research partners showed carbon atoms could be bonded using palladium catalysts. The work aided the drug discovery and synthesis process, but the method only allowed scientists to manipulate molecules in 2D. Most medical compounds involve chiral molecules, molecules that can exist in two forms -- as two mirror images, like a right hand and left hand. Often, the mirror image of a medically beneficial chiral molecule can have ...
