What do you do? Dealing with your period during fieldwork in the Arctic or Antarctic can be a challenge. And yet talking about menstruation has remained taboo. It's why it is on the agenda for the UK Polar Network (UKPN), a voluntary organisation which represents more than 400 early career scientists, and which is piloting a new workshop to tackle the issue head on. "I've had so many of my friends and my peers come and say, 'God, I couldn't talk to anyone about this; I felt so uncomfortable; I felt scared at times'," explains Ellie Hona...

Scientists in search of quantum breakthroughs subject crystalline materials to sound waves

Science
Sept. 24 (UPI) -- To develop the next generation of quantum technologies, scientists need to find materials with unique optical and electrical properties. Often, when materials are put under stress and strain, they reveal unusual physical properties. But measuring the nanoscale effects of strain isn't easy. To aid the search for quantum properties, scientists at the Argonne National Laboratory set out to precisely measure the effects of sound waves on silicon carbide crystal. Researchers used X-rays to observe the atomic changes triggered by the strain of sound waves passing through the material. The X-rays helped scientists study the behavior of defects, holes where atoms should be, buried deep inside the crystalline material. Defects in crystalline materials often feature unique quantu...

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins’ mother to be subject of new movie

Sports
April 29 (UPI) -- Houston Texans star receiver DeAndre Hopkins' mother, Sabrina Greenlee, will have her life story told in a new movie. BRON Studios has partnered with Good Fear and Kituufu Films to develop and produce a feature-length film titled "Sabrina," which will tell the story of Hopkins' mom, according to Variety. "My mom has always put everyone before herself and sacrificed things unimaginable," Hopkins said. "Now it's time for people to see her true value and learn that giving up is not an option." According to Variety, "Sabrina" will follow a single mother "who is attacked and left for dead and finds herself in a battle to change the course of her life and stay on the new path she's created for herself and her four children." "BRON prides itself on telling real, human stories...

Chris Bosh's mother subject of drug trafficking case

Sports
Freida Bosh, the mother of 11-time NBA All-Star Chris Bosh, has been named as a person of interest in a drug trafficking case after his DeSoto, Texas, home was raided by police Friday morning. No arrests were made, but according to WFAA-TV in Dallas and police reports a "large amount of drug paraphernalia" was found inside the house. The DeSoto Police Department issued a release saying it had been tipped off about a large amount of vehicle traffic coming and going from the residence. Witnesses also observed several "hand to hand" transactions that appeared to involve drugs. Police said Chris Bosh is listed as the owner of the house, but the former Miami Heat and Toronto Raptors player was not present. The Dallas Morning News reported DeSoto police detectives searched the home around 6:30 a...
